Reading the numbers correctly
A 1% move on this corridor changes ₩13,889 on $1,000.00. A bank spread of 1.75% costs ₩24,306 — usually several times larger than the fee you can see on the receipt.
How the numbers are built
- · Every conversion crosses through USD using one fixed per-USD rate per currency, so any pair is internally consistent — no triangulation drift between tabs.
- · The fee is deducted from the send amount first, then the spread is applied to what remains. That is how a real telegraphic-transfer quote compounds the two charges, and it is why the received amount is always slightly below amount × rate × (1 − spread).
- · Spreads are the published retail ranges: 1.75% for Korean banks, 2.75%–3.4% at UK and US high-street banks, 0% at mid-market providers. Actual quotes move with the corridor, the amount tier and your account relationship.
- · Currencies with no minor unit (KRW, JPY, VND, IDR) are rounded to whole units; the rest to two decimals.
- · There is no live feed. A static export cannot hold a market-data subscription, and a rate that changes between the server render and hydration would produce a mismatch — so this is a documented snapshot you can reproduce.
Currency conversion questions people actually ask
Why is the bank rate worse than the rate on Google?+
The Google rate is the mid-market rate — the midpoint between global buy and sell prices, available only to institutions trading in size. Retail banks quote you a rate with a spread built in: about 1.75% in Korea, 2.5%–3.4% at Western high-street banks. On a $1,000 transfer that hidden markup is $17.50–$34, more than the visible wire fee in most cases.
Is the fee or the spread more expensive?+
For anything above a few hundred dollars, the spread wins. A $35 wire fee is 3.5% on $1,000 but only 0.7% on $5,000, while a 3% spread stays 3% at every size and is charged on the full amount. That is why large transfers should be judged on the all-in percentage rather than the headline fee.
When is the best time to convert a large amount?+
There is no reliable timing edge for retail transfers, so the practical answer is to reduce exposure rather than to predict. Convert in instalments over the period you actually need the money, and compare all-in cost across two or three providers on the day. A 1% rate difference on a $30,000 tuition payment is $300 — larger than most fee differences.
Should I use the mid-market rate for budgeting?+
Yes, then add a realistic 2%–3% cost buffer for whatever transfer method you will actually use. Budgeting at the bank rate overstates your costs and can talk you out of a sound plan; budgeting at mid-market with no buffer understates them. The matrix above shows both columns for exactly this reason.
Do these rates apply to travel money and card spending?+
No. Cash and card FX is a different product with its own markup — typically 3%–5% for airport cash and around 0%–2.5% for a travel card that uses the mid-market rate. This calculator models wire and fintech remittances, which is where the largest avoidable costs sit.
Rates are a planning snapshot, not a quote. Planning snapshot — mid-market reference rates, not a live feed. Confirm with your bank or broker before transferring. Bank spreads, fixed fees and correspondent-bank charges vary by corridor, amount tier and account type, and some corridors carry additional intermediary deductions on arrival.
