6. Cheapest way to send the money

Sending money abroad from this paycheck?
High-street banks bury a 2.5% ~ 4.5% markup inside inflated exchange rates on top of outgoing SWIFT wire fees. See how much stays in your pocket with transparent mid-market transfers:
Incoming/outgoing wire fees + hidden spread on £1,000.00
Fee only ~£4.80 (no hidden exchange rate markup)
How the numbers are built
- · Rent, food, transport, phone, textbooks and health cover come from a per-city dataset; utilities are keyed to the housing type because dorm fees usually include them.
- · The lifestyle tier changes food and the discretionary buffer only. Rent does not move with lifestyle — you either have a studio or you do not.
- · The runway divides the whole budget by monthly costs, so it is the optimistic number. The “spendable runway” subtracts a 3-month reserve first and is the number to plan against.
- · Part-time earnings are counted gross and at the statutory student minimum or typical entry wage. Real payslips are lower after local payroll tax, and shift availability in a student city is never guaranteed.
- · Currency conversion uses a fixed planning snapshot, not a live rate. A 5% move in your home currency shifts the runway by roughly three weeks on a 12-month budget.
- · Tuition, visa application fees, flights and the initial rental deposit are excluded.
Study abroad budget questions people actually ask
How much money do I actually need to study abroad for a year?+
Living costs alone typically run USD 12,000–24,000 for a year outside the biggest capitals, and 20,000–35,000 in London, New York, Sydney, Zurich or Singapore. Add tuition, a flight and a rental deposit. The proof-of-funds figure on this page is the immigration minimum, not a comfortable budget — it usually lands 20%–30% below what students actually spend.
Dorm, shared flat or studio — which is best for the money?+
A university dorm is cheapest and includes utilities, but supply is limited and often allocated by lottery, so it is not a plan you can rely on. A shared flat is the usual year-two choice and typically costs 20%–35% less than a studio for the same area. A studio buys privacy at roughly 1.6× to 1.8× the shared-flat rent, plus a larger deposit and utilities in your own name.
Does a part-time job cover living costs?+
It closes part of the gap, not all of it. At 20 hours a week on a student wage, earnings usually cover 30%–60% of monthly costs depending on the city — more in cheap cities with high minimum wages, less in London, New York or Zurich. It also can't help with the visa, because proof of funds has to be shown before you arrive.
Why is the runway different from the proof-of-funds requirement?+
Proof of funds is a fixed immigration number per year of study. Your runway is your actual budget divided by your actual costs. If your runway is shorter than the funded months, you need more money before you apply; if it is longer, you still have to show the visa minimum on the application date.
How much emergency fund should a student hold?+
Two to four months of living costs depending on the lifestyle tier — enough for a deposit, a flight home, a broken laptop or a medical bill the student health plan does not fully cover. Keep it in a separate account you do not touch; the spendable runway on this page already excludes it.
Should I convert my whole budget at once?+
Usually not. Converting a full year of tuition and rent on one day exposes you to a single exchange rate. Transferring in term-sized instalments spreads the currency risk, and mid-market providers such as Wise typically beat a bank wire by 1.5%–3% all-in on the same amount.
Planning estimate only, not financial, immigration or education advice. Living-cost figures are 2026 city medians for students; visa proof-of-funds amounts, work-hour caps and health-surcharge rates change with each policy update, so confirm them with the official immigration authority for your destination before you apply.
