How the numbers are built
- · PPP uses the World Bank price-level index (United States = 100) scaled by the city metro multiplier, so rent-heavy capitals land where they should.
- · Payroll tax is the employee side only: income tax plus employee social contributions. Employer costs (US FICA match, AU super, UK employer NI) are excluded because they do not touch your bank account.
- · Sub-national tax (US states, Canadian provinces, Swiss cantons, Scottish rates) is not modelled — those need a postcode and change the answer by 0%–13%.
- · FX rates are fixed planning rates, not live quotes. A 5% currency move shifts every USD comparison in this table.
- · City rent is a city-centre 1-bedroom median; suburbs typically run 20%–35% lower. Living costs exclude rent and one-off relocation expenses.
Relocation questions people actually ask
Should I compare gross or net salary when relocating?+
Net, always — then subtract rent and living costs. A 30% gross raise in a country with a 15-point higher tax wedge and rents at 40% of net pay is usually a pay cut in real terms. The monthly surplus row above is the only number that buys groceries.
Why is the PPP-equivalent salary different from a straight currency conversion?+
Currency conversion keeps nominal value; PPP keeps purchasing power. Converting $95,000 to euros gives you euros, but it does not tell you that Berlin's rent and groceries cost less than New York's. The PPP figure rescales by the price level so the basket of goods stays constant.
What happens on day 183?+
You usually cross from non-resident to tax resident, which means worldwide income becomes taxable in the destination and reporting obligations multiply. In the US the count is weighted across three years; in Ireland it is 183 days or 280 across two years; Germany uses a six-month habitual abode test.
Do I lose money by moving mid-year?+
Possibly. Split-year treatment (UK, Canada, Australia, Ireland, Germany) separates the pre-move and post-move periods, but the US, Korea, Japan and New Zealand generally do not — you can end up resident in two countries for one calendar year, with credits rather than an exemption resolving the overlap.
How much should I budget for the move itself?+
A realistic one-off budget is one to two months of destination net pay: visa fees, health surcharge, flights, a rental deposit (often 2–3 months abroad), furniture and a buffer for the gap before the first local paycheck.
Planning estimate only, not tax or immigration advice. Tax parameters reflect 2026 published rates for a single filer; state, provincial, cantonal and municipal layers are excluded. Visa rules and salary floors change with each policy update — always confirm on the official immigration website linked above before you file.
